I don’t remember exactly when the idea first appeared. Maybe it was after that road trip through the Julian Alps. Or when I watched a YouTube video showing someone sipping coffee by the Ljubljanica River, with snow-capped mountains in the background. Or perhaps it was just a quiet Sunday evening, and I was scrolling through maps, searching for… something different. And Slovenia appeared.
The Attraction
Slovenia – a tiny green heart in the middle of Europe. Clean air, breathtaking nature, and safety statistics that make most countries blush. A place where you can swim in the sea in the morning and hike alpine trails in the afternoon. Where life seems slower, more intentional, and somehow closer to nature. Friends told me about the friendly locals, the high level of English spoken, the efficient public transport. Photos of Lake Bled and the Soča River only added fuel to the fire. I started to wonder – could this actually be my new home?
The Doubts
But then came the questions. What about the language? Slovene looks like a tongue-twister wrapped in mystery. Could I really integrate? Find work? Would I always be the outsider? What’s the cost of living like, outside of tourist hotspots? And bureaucracy… would I survive the paperwork? Moving isn't just romantic – it's real. And sometimes, the real part is messy.
The Inner Dialogue
Heart: “Imagine waking up to mountain views and walking to the market for fresh bread. You’ve always wanted this.”
Head: “And what about your job? Healthcare? Taxes? Do you even know what a davčna številka is?”
Heart: “You can figure that out. People move all the time. Besides, you don’t need all the answers now.”
Head: “But you’ve built a life here. Are you really ready to start over?”
Heart: “Maybe I don’t want to start over. Maybe I want to evolve.”
The Ending – or Beginning?
I haven’t booked a one-way ticket yet. I’m still gathering information, talking to people, reading stories like this one. But I’m listening – not just to the facts, but to that quiet pull toward something new. And maybe, just maybe, Slovenia is calling.
